ΜΗ ΓΙΝΕΤΕ ΕΡΜΑΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΠΑΘΩΝ - DO NOT ALLOW VICE CONQUER YOU

THE ARAB AND HIS CAMEL

Rendered by Vassilios C. Militsis

After an Arabian myth

There was once a bedouin, who after his lunch retired to his tent to get some sleep. Suddenly he was roused by his camel, which it half opened the screen of the entrance and said: “Master, it’s bitter cold out here; permit me to put my snout into the tent at least.” The bedouin, who was a tender-hearted man, brooked no objection and let the camel’s snout stay in the tent. After a while the camel said again with a sigh: “Oh, how cold the wind is; let me put in my neck for some time, too.”

 As the bedouin silently consented, the camel’s neck along with its head entered the tent. “Alas!” said the camel. “It’s raining hard; I’ll be soaked. Do me the favor and let me put my shoulders in to get out of the rain.” In the long run, to put it in a nutshell, the camel succeeded in getting into the tent. But then the bedouin found himself in great inconvenience, for, in fact, there was too little room for both of them. “Let me tell you a few words,” he said to the camel; “as you can see, there isn’t enough room for both of us.”

“If you don’t like it here,” the ungrateful camel replied, “you might as well step out. As far as I’m concerned I feel very comfortable in here, so I intend to stay in.”

Dear young readers, we do not know what message this myth conveys to the Arabs, but of what we have so far recounted, we can easily be taught the following lesson: like the camel, sinning and moral defects seek to enter and settle in our hearts. In the beginning they are merely content with only some room; if we consent to that, they will soon ask for more room until they will occupy the entire available place. Thereafter, we shall not be able to be masters of ourselves, but we will end up to being slaves of our passions and bad habits that have conquered our hearts leaving no room at all for virtue even if we are earnest to harbor it.

Therefore, you never ought to allow entrance into your heart even a small part of vice, for it will not take long for it to take roots in it and it will render you unhappy.

— Τι περιμένουμε στην αγορά συναθροισμένοι;
— Γιατί μέσα στην Σύγκλητο μια τέτοια απραξία;
Τι κάθοντ’ οι Συγκλητικοί και δεν νομοθετούνε;
Τι νόμους πια θα κάμουν οι Συγκλητικοί;
στον θρόνο επάνω, επίσημος, φορώντας την κορώνα;
μ’ ασήμια και μαλάματα έκτακτα σκαλιγμένα;
να βγάλουνε τους λόγους τους, να πούνε τα δικά τους;
κι όλοι γυρνούν στα σπίτια τους πολύ συλλογισμένοι;

Και τώρα τι θα γίνουμε μ' αυτούς τους βαρβάρους;

Τι κι αν νομοθετούν οι Συγκλητικοί;
τα παιδιά των παλαιών Συγκλητικών;

WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS

What are we waiting for, assembled in the forum?

The barbarians are due here today.

Why isn’t anything going on in the senate?
Why are the senators sitting there without legislating?

Because the barbarians are coming today.
What’s the point of senators making laws now?
Once the barbarians are here, they’ll do the legislating.

Why did our emperor get up so early,
and why is he sitting enthroned at the city’s main gate,
in state, wearing the crown?

Because the barbarians are coming today
and the emperor’s waiting to receive their leader.
He’s even got a scroll to give him,
loaded with titles, with imposing names.

Why have our two consuls and praetors come out today
wearing their embroidered, their scarlet togas?
Why have they put on bracelets with so many amethysts,
rings sparkling with magnificent emeralds?
Why are they carrying elegant canes
beautifully worked in silver and gold?

Because the barbarians are coming today
and things like that dazzle the barbarians.

Why don’t our distinguished orators turn up as usual
to make their speeches, say what they have to say?

Because the barbarians are coming today
and they’re bored by rhetoric and public speaking.

Why this sudden bewilderment, this confusion?
(How serious people’s faces have become.)
Why are the streets and squares emptying so rapidly,
everyone going home lost in thought?

Because night has fallen and the barbarians haven’t come.
And some of our men just in from the border say
there are no barbarians any longer.

Now what’s going to happen to us without barbarians?
Those people were a kind of solution.

THE NEW BARBARIANS

Transl. by Vassilis C. Militsis

The barbarians have come, dear Cavafy.

They’re arrived. So, they’re still here;

While you had assured us… you had promised they were a kind of solution.

It would have been better we hadn’t welcomed them:

For they’ve stolen our togas and our elegant canes.

Crowns, bracelets, rings – they have stolen them all.

And they have also stolen the gems that lulled us.

They killed at the drop of a hat. And the big confusion and the big horror followed.

And now what will we become with these barbarians?

The Senators are passing laws racking their brains.

We bar our doors with five locks;

The streets and our hearts have been rendered desolate;

While the barbarians are wreaking havoc without impunity,

And in the long run they are no solution.

THE DESCENDANTS OF THE NEW BARBARIANS

Transl.by Vassilis C. Militsis

Dear Vasilev, I’m most frightened by the new generation of the latter day barbarians.

The children of those who were not a sort of Cavafian solution.

Dear neighbor, they are not mere thieves and murderers, like their fathers.

I can see them at the Agoras.

They are handsome, well-built, they walk in our midst, almost ethereal, with their soft moccasins.

They instil their alabaster smiles, like seductive venom, until there’s nothing left.

It is our spirits they enslave – not our bodies.

It is the dreams of children they imprison in their cages of solid gold.

To hell with the Senators.

No matter what laws the Senators pass, those laws are but an alibi for the serial crimes of the Others

In our right half of our brains.

If you think it over, dear Dimitar, what else can we expect from the children of the old Senators?
