ΤΑ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΟΛΗ - GREEK CHRISTMAS IN CONSTANTINOPLE (INSTANBUL)

Πριν φύγω είχα και κάτι άλλο να κάνω. Να περάσω από το σπίτι του Κεχαγιά, δίπλα, που ακόμα και από έξω, μυρωδιές κανελο-ζάχαρης, μοσχοκάρυδου, σοκολάτας και δεν ξέρω τι άλλο, γέμιζαν τον τόπο που θύμιζε το παραμύθι του Χάνσελ και της Γκρέτελ. Ημουν καλεσμένη για να δω το "Ταννεν μπαουμ" (7) και την Φάτνη. Την Φάτνη;

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

By Niki Beales

Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis

On Christmas Eve Aunt Lemonitsa (not much, however, did she like her name, given to her after her grandmother, who came from Chios) was hustling and bustling; she had to prepare the stuffing of the turkey, as we used to call the gobbler, with pine-cones and chestnuts, kuzu1 mushrooms – picked fresh from the mountain – and a pinch of oregano, rice, and tiny raisins – to give it a sweet flavor and get rid of the bird foul odor. I never asked whether the fowl was a he or a she; besides I wasn’t interested, bana ne2. She had to singe the small feathers over the flame of a gas stove (we had no natural gas in Therapeia, as the installation reached as far as Bebek) despite the thorough plucking of the bird by the tavukci3 at balık pazar, of the Pera fish-market. She was very careful with the singeing not to sear the skin and had to stand madam Vangelio’s, my granny’s, telling off.

The shortbreads, baked with fresh butter and almonds, – a secret recipe –Godmother’s halva cakes (Godmother, Theodora’s easy recipe), had been ready since some days before. She could also have enough time to make some mont blancs as she was left with plenty of chestnuts. All she had to do was to peel the chestnuts and grind them in the potato masher. Uncle Thanassis could help with the peeling, after he was through reading The Apoyevmatini paper. Now she had barely enough time to get busy with the Christmas tree.

                           mont blanc

Due to her husband’s job, my aunt lived in a small villa, consisting of large rooms and a kitchen-cum-drawing and dining room. The dining room table was made of old pine wood and was fitted with four drawers for the napkins and the table clothes, bearing the monograms, as well as the silverware, handy for daily use. There was also a large couch on which a lot of us have snatched a nap and we even fell fast asleep when we needed to. There was a big oven as well as small ones. And what meals they have baked in that oven! The bathroom was adjacent to the kitchen – an odd layout in my opinion. It was fitted with a huge bathtub right in the middle and the big windows faced the courtyard of the neighboring house and the kitchen; next to the kitchen there was also the depo-ambar, (the storeroom), which communicated through a back door; Now, why the door was called back-door, as it was actually a side door I was never told – I had never bothered to ask – anyway, it was a small detail of no importance.

The house belonged to the German Kahya (official), who, when he retired and went back to his country, the house remained empty. The new German Kahya was given another bigger one. These houses were summer German residences inside the park belonging to the German Embassy in Ankara. The houses were big, of fine architecture and resembled lithe, white doves.

At her first Christmas after my aunt had moved to her new house, she was infected with the European custom of the tree – we used to call it the Santa Claus Tree and decorated it on New Year’s Eve. Granny was always murmuring: “New, foreign trends,” certainly forgetting that the decorated tree had already been a foreign custom, but we had grown out of it. Now, we began to bedeck it on Christmas Eve, instead. She also honored her birthday, as she had no name day. Well, she was lady of her hearth and home, so, in for a penny, in for a pound, as the saying goes, she could afford some luxury.

I also used to go and help in the decoration, which involved a different process and ritual – if ours did not come from the Asiatic side of the city, where my dad worked, we would order it at Milinski’s flower shop of Çiçek Pasajı, the flower arcade in Pera.

Early in the morning, two days before Christmas Eve, the bahçıvan başı4 of the Embassy used to bring a small çam5, around a meter high, which he had uprooted, laboring hard to preserve the roots intact so that he could replant it in a rusty tin pot, and before the cockerel crowd, he would leave it by the white front door. He would plant it again in its mother soil, right in the same hole wherefrom he had taken it after St Athanasius’ Feast (my aunt kept it till then) while the gardener justly grumbled.

Gathered in the special sitting room we would listen on the radio shortwave broadcast to the famous Greek singers Marianna Chatzopoulou and Gounaris, and over and over again the Christmas Carols in men’s choral voices with mandolin countermelody, and children’s voices to the accompaniment of triangular chimes. Contrary to ours, which were sung at dusk, the carols in Greece proper were sung in the morning beginning with the lyrics “Good morning, Merry Gentlemen…”

Nibbling on a random rusk or some hazelnuts, we protracted our fasting till the next day; in the meantime, we decorated the small tree, which from a meter grew to one and a half, as it was temporarily planted in the tin pot, which in turn was placed on a stool. It was adorned with glass, heavy Christmas balls – we called them bubbles – bought from baskets outside of the shop at the Mahmut pasha6 bazaar, but the finer, the fragile and more expensive ones were available for sale at Crystal’s, and the most expensive, the thinnest and the lightest, especially the one that was to be placed at the top, were bought at Karako’s, I think. We would also put fluffed cotton – my specialty – on the branches to look like snow; we surrounded it with tinsel threads, different from the common domestic ones. Those must have been European – German anyway. They had been left in a drawer from the previous owners of the house. They were heavy and hung like stalactites from the ends of the branches and glittered like silver rain drops. Last were put the small pegs with the candles …

Before I went, I had to do one more thing: I had to visit the Kahya’s [official’s] house, nearby; even from outside the house fragrances of cinnamon and sugar, mace, chocolate and I don’t know what else filled the premises and reminded you of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. I had been invited to see the Tannen Baum7 and the Manger. Oh, yes, the Manger. A large room had been emptied of its furniture save for a sofal and two wooden stools: the official’s wife had built an entire village with lakes and rivers, with little houses and a castle, with little trees and roads, earth paths, stones and pebbles, dwarf mountains and hillocks – all at the foot of the Tannen Baum. The Nativity Cave was right in the middle. Joseph holding his staff had leaned protectively over Maria. They were both bent over the straw bed of the Holy Infant. The Star of Bethlehem shone through the roof opening of the cave and the donkey on the ground was ready with its stirrups. There was no snow anywhere…All was lush green. The shepherds, some standing and some seated, kept vigil over their sheep. One of the Magi was on his knees with his camel, also kneeling next to him; the other two had dismounted, their camels standing further on. Stillness and religious devoutness reigned. Lambs, cows, horses – all those animals had been handmade of wood, clay and dough. The tree, reaching high, was decked with ornaments of hay and reeds, stars of paper – all handmade – with nuts, almonds, apples, slivers of dried oranges, miniature, red apples, and at the top there was a delicate Angel with thin, gossamer wings, molded from dough. Small quivering candles were scattered all over the ‘village’ and Ilse, the little golden-haired only daughter of the couple, broke the silence playing in my honor Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht. Meanwhile, walking on tip-toe, my hostess offered me a cup of hot foamy chocolate with cream and dusted cinnamon, sprinkled with a star shaped anis sprig with a clove in the middle. Silently, despite his knee-high, shiny, brown boots he was always wearing, the host, regarding his little daughter with an affectionate smile, pulled up a stool and sat next to me. The man, away from his native land, celebrated his own traditional Christmas together with his wife and child and me being a witness of their tradition.

Ilse finished playing, curtsied before her parents, and coming over to my seat gave me a hug. The official stood up, and his wife, a sweet smile on her face, shyly gave me a small, paper-thin, silk-like bag containing her fragrant goodies; she wished me in German frohe Weihnachten [Merry Christmas], repeated by his husband and daughter. I knew it was time I left. The dusk was falling; I hurriedly crossed the gravel path of the garden/park, disturbing with my footfalls the sparrows, which were about to perch for the night. Their servant was waiting for me to open the grilled gate that was fixed with a bell. The surf was breaking on the shore placidly as if caressing it. It began to grow foggy and the street lights were on. “The kid is late” granny must have been thinking. I quickened my step on the way home to catch up with the evening carols. The Christmas tree in our home would be decorated on New Year’s Eve. We would keep our own custom (though foreign) for still a bit longer.

In loving memory of those who live with the Angels.

ΓΛΩΣΣΙΚΑ ΠΡΟΒΛΗΜΑΤΑ ΚΑΙ ΜΕΛΙΤΖΑΝΕΣ - LANGUAGE PROBLEMS AND AUBERGINES

ΤΟ...

Νίκη Beales

Που να τα ξέρω; Με ποιόν και από ποιόν θα τα μάθαινα;

Αλεκάκης. Τουρκάκια δεν είχε, με ποιόν να τα μιλήσω;

MY LANGUAGE PROBLEM

By Niki Beales

Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis

How could I speak it? With whom and from whom could I learn it?

Our house was in an alley; there was no place for me to come out and play, and when I used to go to my granny’s neighborhood and I could go out, my playmates included Charilaos, my cousin, Georgie, madam Marika’s son – his cousin – Christakis and Alekakis, the youngest. As there were no Turkish children around, how could I speak their language?

Of course, every so often, my daddy brought from across (where he worked at Servi Burnu, Istanbul) Mehmet to draw water with the pump from the well – we used to share the water with our neighbor, Ahmet effendi – for cleaning the house. We used to call him ‘big’ because he was burly, but I had no dealings with him; he looked at me, I looked back, he smiled at me and I reciprocated. Then, the other Mehmet came, too, for some odd jobs; he was ‘the small one’ as he was rather of short stature, but I had no dealings with him either. The same thing: we would look at each other, and that was it. Even kör [blind] Ibrahim, the saka [water-carrier], who peddled drinking water drawn from the public tap, came with his wife, who did the washing of clothes down in the large kitchen/laundry with the big washboard and the large, black stone/plates on the floor. They both spoke Greek haltingly, at least to me.

They did not pay much attention to me; after all what for?  I was a mere runt. Like all children the time also came for me to go to school. My teachers were Mrs Eugenia, Mrs Anastasia, Mrs Aspasia and Enıse Hanım. A problem had cropped up with the latter, a smiling and good-hearted woman, with her short-cut, bushy white hair, who was rather short, and somewhat advanced in age. We could not understand each other. Except for expressions like var and yok, al and ver, gel and git, and let me admit a tamam*, I got no wind of anything else. Nothing, I would come up with snake eyes. However, Enıse Ögretmen Hanım [Madam Teacher] demanded more; she did not find my effort enough. Her objective was that I learn the language of the state, which was naturally her own language. She was patient and loved children. I was a kid and a child’s brain absorbs everything like a sponge, and mine did not fall short; therefore, we haltingly began to understand each other. In two years I was promoted to a higher class and my teacher was Semiha Hanım. She was tall and slim with a pair of enormous eyes and an even more enormous mouth. She was fond of handicraft and painting; ‘We’ll get on’, I thought. I was making progress in Turkish – I learned new words, verbs, word endings, the grammatical numbers, everything. She used to tell tales and Ata Sözleri [proverbs and maxims], and whatever useful she could teach us. I was a proficient learner, my vocabulary was growing to a larger extent, I was interested in learning a host of different things – I grew out of merhaba [hello], Imam [religious leader], aman-zaman [oh, golly] and I went as far as beyendi [I like it].

At the threshold of my mind, the reminiscence has of late been driven home after I entered the local supermarket. As soon as I had set foot in the shop, it was there in front of me as though it had been expecting me. And again, I often stumble on it in all four seasons alike. It is always in front of me as if with a provocative glance it invites me to approach it. I obey and I observe it in the various wooden or plastic crates –  we used to call them kafesler (cages), I wonder why – it comes in different sizes and shapes; sometimes a bit dark, other times a bit light colored; sometimes it is smaller than usual, rounded at the ends like a banana. And every blue moon, it comes out smallish – acayip (strange) as my girlfriend, Sina, would say in the mixed Greco-Turkish lingo. You can also find it like okra, but of different color or like a small pepper. It is often longish, toptan (ball-shaped), bright like a patent leather well-shined woman’s pump, and in purple stripes. The object in question is, naturally, the egg-plant – patlican in Turkish – manzana in medieval Greek and vazana in the Cypriot idiom, as I have recently found out. The aubergine, as it is called in English, was, together with so many other items of this nature, non-existent when I first arrived in England. Now with the climate change, which has turned everything upside down, it was first introduced by my pioneer friend Nikos from Syrianochori, Cyprus, and began to be cautiously cultivated in the country.

We were being informed by my granny and the wall calendar about the onset of the Christmas Fasting period, which begins on St Philip's Day, November 14: ‘Fasting commences’ the detached leaf wrote. And this vegetable, already abounding in the heart of the winter as in all four seasons, provides the opportunity of a variety of dishes on our table. As I was putting the egg-plants in my shopping basket at a recent visit to the supermarket, I recalled Enıse Hanım and Semiha Hanım and their attempts to initiate me into the secrets of the official state language…. And when I learned what the word bayıldı [he/she swooned] I fell weeping into my mother’s arms pleading her not to prepare the egg-plants with the recipe Imam bayıldı [the imam swooned], because I was afraid that my father would swoon!
