THE SHOW MUST GO ON ΔΑΝΙΗΛ, ΑΝΘΟΥΛΑ
2020}
Άκουγε συνέχεια το «I am a woman in love» με την Barbara Streisand και έβλεπε στο βίντεο πάλι και πάλι την ταινία The Way We Were ή στα ελληνικά Τα καλύτερά μας χρόνια, όπου συμπρωταγωνιστούσε με τον Robert Rendford. I am a woman in Love, I am a woman in Love, I am a woman in Love.
«Addio del passato».
To ίδιο και η
Sola, perduta,
in landa desolata! Orror! Intorno
a me s’oscura il ciel… Ahimè, son
sola! E nel profondo
deserto io cado, strazio
crudel, ah! sola abbandonata, io, la deserta
donna! Ah! non voglio
morir! No! non voglio
morir! No! non voglio
morir… amore, aita!
στις Μεγάλες Προσδοκίες (The Great Expectations) του Charles Dickens. Εδώ τα
«Η καρδιά μου είναι αυτή and it is broken. Can you feel that?».
«Amado Mio» και «Put the blame on me, baby». Η Rita
παρά τις δυστυχίες, «the Show must go on» και η αλήθεια των στίχων θέτει
THE SHOW MUST GO ON By Anthoula Daniil Litt.D. and literary critic. She is
a member of the Writer’s Union and the Greek Musical and Drama Critics Union. Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis She was
constantly listening to I am a woman in
love by Barbara Streisand and was repeatedly watching The Way We Were on the DVR. Robert
Redford was co-starring. Clad in her robe
de chambre she would sprawl in her chaise longue, place a red neckerchief
on the lampshade and burn a number of tea-lights on a shallow crystal
platter. In this way the tiny tongues of light increased and she played again
and again the same record on the record-player. I am a woman in Love, I am a woman in Love, I am a woman in Love.
In no way could she forget that old story. She could never get over that
traumatic experience. Never! Never! No, that wound will never heal. That’s how it might have happened with Maria Callas in the really beautiful Zeffirelli’s motion picture Callas For Ever, starring the divine Fanny Ardant and Jeremy Irons. Callas, all alone in her apartment in an immense Paris, is listening to Verdi’s La Traviata, composed in Venice in 1853. A century later Callas was destined to triumph in it. And now, Addio del passato. Her rise and fall. Not only she but her fans as well could not overcome what has occurred. The same case with Puccini’s Manon Lescaut: Sola, perduta, abbandonata. Sola, perduta,
in landa desolata! Orror! Intorno
a me s’oscura il ciel… Ahimè, son
sola! E nel profondo
deserto io cado, strazio
crudel, ah! sola abbandonata, io, la deserta
donna! Ah! non voglio
morir! No! non voglio
morir! No! non voglio
morir… amore, aita! Lonely, lost, abandoned ... This is an
aria sung not only by Callas but by other great sopranos, as well. The story
is usual and often real. La Dame aux
Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, the younger (1848) was the young courtesan
Marie Duplessis, who died at 23, the author’s lover. Marie became Marguerite
Gautier in the novel, whereas in Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata she was changed into Violet (from a flower into
another flower.) The story, more or less, has a lot in common with Manon Lescaut, who from a heroine of
Abbé Prevost, in his Memoirs of a Man
of Quality (1884) she became Puccini’s heroine in his opera titled after
her (1890). Both heroines die in the end though they do not want to. Who
wants to die, after all? Putting romance aside, let us proceed to a novel of social content; specifically The Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Its literary characters appeared in the movies, in fact, in many and interesting versions, spanning the times and renewing the figure of a hoary issue. Only that here the one in love, cheated and abandoned, is a man; namely Pip. In Alfonso Cuaron’s free version with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow, the scene that has been impressed in our minds is the one where Miss Havisham, who had been abandoned shortly before her wedding, still in her wedding dress, flipped out. Miss Havisham, too, belongs to the previous class of female victims; only that she survived to endure the betrayal gnawing away at her. However, she was not a courtesan. The courtesans died young and were deified by Art. Miss Havisham goes on living in her cobwebbed mansion, still prepared for her wedding, the sumptuous cutlery and silverware, candlesticks laid out in the spacious dining hall – all decayed by time to mark her psyche. It is essentially her dead love that became a banshee in the cenotaph where as an undead she looks forward to a single goal: to avenging in every man the man that has hurt her. Therefore, she employs Estella as a perfectly diabolical instrument. Each man that falls in love with Estella, her enticing protégée, must pay for Miss Havisham’s suffering. The saying that time is a great healer does not apply to Miss Havisham’s case, for, as it speeds on, it opens up a still deeper furrow in her morbid soul. These are the great griefs, says Elytis in Maria
Nephele. She, a ghoulish and vindictive person, she is constantly playing
the same record on the gramophone: Besame
mucho. In the movie the song is sung in all tunes and various versions.
It is the same desire in every era but differently expressed, while Estella
and Pip dance guided by Miss Havisham. Two graceful little kids that grow up
to fall in love, but only Pip does as Estella functions like a clockwork,
punitive tool. Let us pause
at the scene where Pip takes Miss Havisham’s hand and places it upon his
heart. “Do you know what that is?” he asks and at once answers her. “It’s my
heart and it is broken. Can you feel that?” and she shakes her deeply furrowed
face and nods; “Yes.” Each wrinkle can confirm her vast knowledge of the
issue of broken hearts. And her wrinkles are not scores of time but of pain. And now it is
high time we switched from ‘glorious’ Paris to glamorous Hollywood: Amado Mio and Put the Blame on Mame, boys,
sung by Rita Hayworth. Although she excites the entire male crowd, she lives
and breathes only for him – she sings and dances like a mad woman only to
stir him. The movie is the famous Gilda,
in which Hayworth’s singing is dubbed by Anita Ellis. But Rita Hayworth
stands out. Much as the world goes ahead, the soul remains unchanged. People
will always retain an Achilles’ heel in their hearts. And the treachery of
love is the worst deed. All the rest are infuriating; the former is lethal. Just for a single night To fill up with light My terrible darkness …. I wish you would come for a while Even if you disappeared afterwards. She won’t
come, though. What is lost is lost forever. The optative version and the
details of the verb fantasized by the poet denotes that what is missing is
very significant, which, alas, has been irrevocably lost. The aura of the
song is oddly related to Cavafy’s Kaisarion***
Both poets are from Alexandria, Egypt, and deal with the issue of a beloved
person’s absence in a similar way. Both cases converge to the theme of
absence. And now back
to ‘glorious’ Paris. Jean Cocteau, multitalented, versatile and resourceful,
wrote La Voix Humaine in 1930. A
woman is torn to pieces out of love for him, who is leaving her; she is
imploring him on the phone. The line is being continually disconnected; does
that perhaps mean that there is an external obstructive factor? The story
involves a monologue on stage written by a man and concerns a woman talking to
her lover for the last time, for he is marrying another woman. And she, on the
brink of insanity, is begging him for forgiveness and she promises to do
whatever he will ask her though she is afraid to bother him. She will give
him back his love letters; she is willing to burn them so that he won’t worry
about her. All she wants is to keep the ashes in a small snuffbox she had
given him as a present. Her attempt to take her life did not come off, and
therefore, she is resolved to live alone in order to be loyal to his
memory…The piece, certainly, is a monologue but it involves many levels
beside the prevalent one, which
concerns a woman in love who has been abandoned. This heart
wrenching soliloquy has been interpreted in a dramatic fashion by a host of
actresses, amongst which were Simone Signoret, Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullmann, Julia Migenes,
Denise Duval and Renata Scotto. Anna Magnani in Rossellini’s motion picture L’ Amore (1948) formed her own opinion
on the issue and ended her relationship with Rossellini when the latter began
an affair with Ingrid Bergman. Francis
Poulenc’s opera La Voix Humaine (1958) is
based on Cocteau’s heartbreak of a woman in order to render the despair
of desertion. The leading part was impersonated by Felicity Lott and by
glamorous and highly descriptive Elli Lambeti**** in its Greek version during
the years 1950, 1971 and 1978. Her picture at her best can be found on the
web. The monologue is over while she hangs up with an endless I love you, I love you… La Voix Humaine has been presented under the title I Have Eyes on my Ears at the Small Theater of Ancient Epidaurus on August 7 and 8, 2020. Myrsini Margariti impersonated the heroine. And indeed through our ears we could see the fluctuations of human soul. And these upheavals of the human soul have been literally conveyed through a voice and a piano. Myrsini Margariti as the voice and Maria Petropoulou on the piano have presented the same piece at the Athens Concert Hall in 2016. It should be pointed out that Cocteau gave the name La Voix Humaine and not Voix Féminine, thus expanding the tragic experience of desertion on both sexes… However,
despite the misfortunes, The Show Must
Go On and the truth of the lyrics poses questions to which there is no
answer. Life, unfeeling, goes on. Sunday morning on the radio, Callas is
singing the aria from Madama Butterfly Cio
Cio San, a true story turned into a novel by Pierre Loti, Madame Chrysanthème (1887), which
inspired Puccini when it was played on stage. In 1904 it made its opening night
at the Scala. The story is well known; it concerns an old Japanese custom
that allows a foreigner to have a ‘temporary’ wife as long as he sojourns in
the country. In this way the woman is not considered a prostitute. Cio Cio
San, an underage geisha, is forced into such a marriage, believing it is a
normal one. She falls in love with her American ‘husband’ whereas he is not
really interested in her, save in his short stay and in how he can pick every
flower he likes. Afterwards, he
leaves with the promise to return and take her to America with him. She gives
birth to their son but they are both in dire straits. She is desolate,
abandoned, mortified and repudiated by her kin. In vain is she expecting her
alleged husband whereas the go-between, aka procurer, is pressuring her into
another marriage. The American has his own family in America. When he returns
to Japan, he takes the child and she commits seppuku. In this way, she dies
an honorable death instead of living in dishonor. It is at this point where
the heartbreaking aria Cio Cio San
is heard. It has been sung by all the great sopranos of the world. The
heroine’s tragic position goes beyond the treason and the desertion of love,
and borders on the condition of the woman who becomes an object of abuse. *Mimis Traiforos
