At first there
was but random news of the police bulletin, basically of local interest. An
Australian accountant or other attempted to set fire to a chocolate plant. A
Hispanic char woman in Los Angeles smothered to death her three children with
the same pillow. A Ukrainian Mafia gangster reported spontaneously to the
Kiev Security Police Headquarters and, having confessed to fourteen murders,
jumped out of the window. These and other similar incidents were taking place
in late August. Over the following weeks, such occurrences began to accumulate acquiring thus more massive dimensions: On September 10, the afternoon tea gathering in a retirement home at the outskirts of Liverpool turned into a sex spree, to the degree, naturally, allowed by the age of the boarders. Six days later at the half-time of a friendly basketball match, the players of Malta National Team – victorious so far – locked themselves up in the locker room and slashed their wrists with a razor. None of the surviving players agreed to explain the deed; they only burst out into loud weeping at the slightest provocation and threatened to make a new attempt at the first opportunity. On October 3, it was the last straw: more than four hundred outbursts of insanity were noted on the planet culminating to the grotesque event of Athens: at 2:30 in the afternoon the passengers of a bus on the Pangrati to New Ionia line ran amuck and forced the driver to drive them on here and there in the Attica Valley with the radio in full blast. Finally at dawn, in order to abandon the vehicle, they set the uncanny following terms: that the prime minister himself hurry on the spot and tell the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood! After a stormy
meeting of the Supreme Government Council, the request was granted in a live
show to the opprobrium of the Opposition. The passengers may have been spared
of arrest and trial – which might as well have merely extended the drollery
of the situation – the leaders, however, of the civilized countries were
finally convinced that this new scourge that threatened humanity should be
dealt with responsibility. Hosts of
scientists were recruited – psychiatrists, sociologists, criminologists – and
naturally the first thing to do was to name the woe: they dubbed it Loss of Mental Balance, which had been
an extremely key term, judging from how fast it was adopted by the
journalists. From then on, the hardest part followed. Which were the cause
and, above all, the appropriate treatment of LMB? What induced all sorts of people – and especially those
incorporated, in one way or another, into social process – to abrupt paroxysms
of mental disorder? At this point experts were at a loss. It goes without
saying scores of theories were proposed, which had to do either with the
ozone depletion or with the chemical tampering of food, or even with the
everyday extinction of certain rare birds or reptiles. Allegedly, this
extinction ruptured the global life chain. However, none sounded really
convincing, since after all, the same ignominies had occurred for whole
decades, but no sweat for Homo Sapiens. But how did push come to shove in the last months of 1999? “During the last months of 1999…” young psychologist, François Bulande mused aloud, being convinced that he had already unraveled the puzzle. He hastened to propound as convincingly as he could his postulate and fax the results to the Ministry of Presidency, in Paris. Fortunately for us, they took him seriously and to such an extent that they assigned a research company to check on his theory. The results, initially in France and then in the rest of the developed world, fully verified his proposition: the most powerful source of anxiety for the average person was but the transition to the third so-called millennium. All sorts of features and festivities for its reception that were preparing in East and West, the ritual countdown to its end, caused but a latent discomfort that made the more sensitive people exhibit extreme panic. “Have we completely flipped?” the German chancellor was outraged when the issue was brought to summit level “Hell has broken loose over here: the earth population is rapidly booming, the natural environment is being destroyed and democracy is threatened by all sorts of nationalisms and the religious bigotry of the third world! Is perhaps the number 2000 really our problem? “People are always being obsessed with symbols,” the Russian spokesman cut in putting him in his place. “Cross, crescent, swastika, hammer and sickle: millions of people have sacrificed their lives for their sake without even seeking their true significance…” “There might not have been any meaning at all behind those symbols,” added the Canadian prime minister dipping a cookie in his cup of coffee. “History moves amidst simplifications, which inexorably end up to the duality – good and evil. Therefore, the number 2000 is a very bad symbol, and unhappily inevitable…” “The politician also knows how to cover up…” the American president said flaunting his manicured fingers. From the
following day on a concerted effort of degrading, in the conscience of the
masses, the transition into the millennium began. With discreet persistence,
the governments discouraged all festive events. And certainly, were it easy
to outlaw the various lunatic heresies that prophesied World Destruction or
Doom’s Day, the commercial exploitation had to be met with in other ways: CIA
stealthily canceled (supposedly for national security reasons) the New Year’s
Day Celebration in Times Square, New York, lavishly reimbursing the Hollywood
company, which had undertaken the organizing of the festivities. The mayor of
Athens ensured his political future for good after agreeing to abort the
order of a million anniversary team shirts, which he was going to give out to
his citizens. The Pope himself made his rickety presence in the St Peter’s
Balcony and made it clear to the faithful that the incarnation of God had
been conventionally placed by the Church Fathers in the year 1, whereas
recent historical research has proved that Jesus was born in the year 6 BCE;
therefore, we are already in 2006 – calm down! – Besides, what does time
matter compared to faith? The Patriarch of Constantinople agreed and abetted. In vain; it
was already mid November when LMB
was running rampant in towns and villages: the newscasters all over Europe
would spend seventy odd hours going on talking unceasingly before at the same
time sinking into profound torpor and letting the Continent alone. In
Switzerland, a very stable country, people went berserk and started
systematically shattering calendars, clocks and watches, dealing a stunning
blow to the national economy. When the renowned Swiss banks were imperiled,
NATO sent troops to protect them. The humanitarian operation had been running
like clockwork until the banks’ general manager went insane and attempted a
coup to take over power. He was going to be the first colored dictator of a
non-African country! The Swiss incident was the straw that broke the back of American tolerance. “Enough is enough,” barked the President at his staff. “Since humanity can’t stand the year 2000, who are we to meddle in their lives?” “It’s not us – it’s the time that goes by relentlessly…” a consulting officer stammered in a mumbo-jumbo philosophical mood. “Democracy can even stop time if it only means it! Wait and see!” the President interrupted him and stormed into his Oval Office to address the Nation. The resolution of the United States to defer the year 2000 indefinitely, being indeed salutary, was promptly adopted by the European Union and in turn by all the UN country members. The peoples of the world sighed in relief freed from the nightmare that choked them. Normalcy was fully restored. Only that everything – acts, sentiments, desires – seemed to have suddenly lost their gravity as though they were manifested in an artificial temporal vacuum without continuity or consistency. 1999a
succeeded 1999b, which flew by auspiciously like the following eight years.
We are already through 1999k and our country is celebrating as it has been
internationally decided that when the Latin alphabet has been exhausted, it
will be followed by the Greek and not by the Cyrillic one, as the Slavs had
requested. Either way, 1999 will apparently never end. Instead, figuratively
or literally, History itself has ended. Now if you ask about those scant extremists, who insist that we are still in 2010 and act accordingly in the fringe of world order, I wonder how I can comment on such a quaint dissonance. “Humanity,” they claim, “has been hamstrung and drowned in its greasy present. However,” they brag, “we are advancing unabated to the future.” “Unabated but alone. And doomed,” I reply. |

TWO INCIDENTS By Lemonia Foutzopoulou* Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis One She got into
the car at night and drove to look for him. He had been missing since New
Year’s Eve. He had promised he would play at cards for a short time just for
the new year’s good luck. He would soon be back so that they could be
together for the festivities of the new year’s inception. She believed him as
he had sworn by the baby they were expecting; he would put an end to his
gambling. She knew where to find him. She drove to Piraeus. By port gate
three there was a dirt road leading to the Club Hawaii. It was also known around as Aleko’s Baroom. She pushed the door and someone tried to stop
her, but he was so drunk that she sidled past him easily. She descended to
the basement and there behind the storeroom was the room where some riffraff
like her husband were throwing dice. A stifling atmosphere in a yellowish
light prevailed in the room, while the clouds of smoke prevented you from
making out faces. Everybody was bent over the table where the game was going
on. All were disheveled and drunk, soaked in sweat, ties loose, shirttails
outside trousers, eyes red from staying up all night and adrenaline – they
were quarreling and hurling invectives against one another. She could see her
husband among this scum. He did not see her; it was enough that she saw him.
She turned around on the spot and walked up and out into the night air to
take a breath. Two She pushed her
plate away from her and folded her arms on the table, while her eyes were
fixed on the opposite wall. Five, ten, thirty minutes passed in complete
silence, their eyes staring into nothingness. After the diagnosis, her husband
inexplicably refused to undergo any treatment. Despite her endearments, tears
and beseeching, she could not make him change his mind; neither could their
children. He was dead set on believing it was not worth the trouble of
wasting his time with treatments of dubious results. He ruled that his time
had merely been close at hand. He had also given up food since three days
previously. As soon as he sat down at the table, he would push his plate away
from him and fold his arms. Today she decided to mimic him. At first she
announced that since he was determined to depart this life, she would do the
same thing. Thus, they found themselves in the kitchen sitting still and
silent, their arms folded on the table. The hours were speeding by, the sun
set and in a short while shadows began to fill the room. It was already
midnight and the man was dead certain that his wife meant exactly what she
was talking about. He slowly
stood up, held her hand and drawing her into his arms, he said: “Together in
life, together in death,” and they both began to rock to the rhythms of a muted
music. Lemonia Foutzopoulou, born in Larissa in 1970, studied Agricultural Science at the Athens
University and then she did her post graduate at the University of Thessaly. She
worked occasionally both in the public and private fields. She had also
attended the workshops of creative writing of the author Argyro Mantoglou and
the poet Alexios Mainas in the area of culture South – Art and Action. |

Rendered by Vassilis C.
Militsis The order was crystal clear: “The approach
to the river less than seven hundred feet is forbidden, let alone swimming in
it. It brooks no misunderstanding. Disobeying the order means court martial.” The major himself read it to them. He had summoned the entire battalion for the order to be read. The order had been issued by the division! It was a no laughing matter. They had been billeted on this side of the river. On the opposite bank there was the enemy – the Others, as they were commonly called. Three weeks of inaction. The status quo would certainly not last for long but for the time being all was quiet. On both sides of the river there was a dense forest extending to a long distance. And it was in this forest that both armies had camped. Information had it that the Others had two battalions there. However, they attempted no offensive; no one knew what they intended to do. Meanwhile, the guard posts on both sides were interspersed randomly, hidden in the forest, ready just in case. Three weeks!
It was a wonder that three entire weeks had sped by! No such a long truce has
been remembered for about two and a half years since the start of the war. When they had got to the river, it was still cold. But for some days lately, the weather had improved. Spring set in at last! The first to steal down to the river was a sergeant. He glided down one morning and took a dive. Sometime later, he crawled back to the camp with two bullets in his ribs. It did not take him long to die. On the next
day, two privates headed to the river. They were never seen again. Only a
couple of shots had been heard, and then silence. It was at this point when the order had been issued by the division. The river,
however, was a great temptation. They could hear its waters running on and
they craved for a dive. During those two and a half years they stunk
horribly. They had missed a host of small pleasures. And now this river was a
blessing before them. But what about the order of the division? -
To hell with
the division order, he said through
clenched teeth at that night. He tossed and turned in his straw mattress without being able to find peace. The river could be heard from afar and did not let him rest. No
matter what, he resolved to go the next day. To hell with the division order. His comrades were sleeping. Finally, he fell into slumber himself. He had had a dream, or rather a nightmare. At first he saw it as it was: a mere river. It was waiting for him. He was standing on the bank, stark naked, but could not dive; as if an unseen hand stopped him (…) He woke up deeply disturbed. It was still dark… He had got the chance to head to the river. It was a wonderful morning! If he was lucky and none got wind of him… if he could only make it and take a dive into the water; he did not give a dime for the consequences. He hung his clothes in a tree on the bank and propped his rifle upright against the trunk. He took a couple of final glances, one behind in case someone of his fellows saw him and another at the opposite bank as a precaution of being seen by the Others. Then he got into the water. From
the moment his stark naked body, which had been tormented and marked by two
wounds for two and a half years, got into the water, he felt another man. He
felt as though an invisible hand had wiped through him with a sponge and
deleted those two and a half years. Now he was swimming face down, now doing backstroke. He let the stream sweep him along. He was also flying underwater holding his breath. Now
this soldier, who was no older than twenty-three years old, was transformed
into a child. But the last two and a half years had left deep imprints inside
him. Left and right, on both banks, birds fluttered from time to time from above greeting him. Some distance ahead, a tree branch was floating dragged by the current. He attempted to reach it in a long underwater plunge and finally made it. He surfaced right beside it. He felt elated! But at the same time he caught sight of a head some ninety feet distant up front. He
stopped and tried to see better. And the latter one, who was swimming there, had also stopped. They kept looking at each other. The former man changed to what was before: a soldier who had already fought for two and a half years, who had been awarded a War Cross and who had stood his rifle against a tree. He could not discover whether the one facing him was one of his own or of the Others. How could he find out? He could only make out a head. The man might be one of his own or perhaps one of the Others. For some minutes, both were facing each other dead still in the water. The silence was interrupted by a sneezing. It was the one on this side that sneezed; he cursed aloud, as was his habit. Then the one fronting him started swimming away swiftly to the opposite bank. He lost no time either. He swam to his bank with all his strength. He stepped out first. He rushed to the tree where he had left his rifle and grabbed it. The Other was just wading out of the water. He was also hurrying to get his rifle, too. He raised his rifle and pointed at the Other. It was too easy for him to plant a bullet into his head. The Other was a great target, only some sixty feet away, as he was running stark naked. But no; he did not pull the trigger. The Other was there, completely naked as he had been brought into the world. He, too, was naked as he was born . He felt himself unable to pull the trigger. They were both naked. Two naked human beings. Stripped of clothes, names and nationalities. Free from their Khaki selves. No way for him
to pull the trigger. The river did not put them apart now; on the contrary,
it brought them together. He could not pull the trigger. The Other had changed into another human being – not the Other – no less, no more. He dropped his rifle. He lowered his head. He saw nothing until the end; what he could only see was some frightened birds flutter over him as the shot was heard from the opposite bank, and he, dropping first on his knees, collapsed upon the ground, face down. by the same:
