Ο ΔΙΑΧΡΟΝΙΚΟΣ ΑΙΣΩΠΟΣ - AESOP FOR ALL SEASONS

Latin

Mercurius, scire volens quanto in pretio apud homines esset, forma hominis induta, in statuarii officinam se contulit. In qua statuam Iovis conspicatus, eum, quanti ipsa veniret, interrogavit. Tum statuarius “Si illas emeris,” inquit, “hanc tibi auctarium dabo.”

Moral

Hominem inanis gloriae studio captum fabula respicit, qui nullo in pretio est apud ceteros.

English

Samuel Croxall (Mercury and the Carver)

MERCURY having a mind to know how much he was esteemed among men, transformed himself into the shape of one of them; and going into a carver’s shop, where little images were to be sold, he saw Jupiter, Juno, himself, and most of the other gods and goddesses. So, pretending that he wanted to buy, says he to the carver, What do you ask for this? and pointed to the figure of Jupiter. A groat says the other. And what for that? meaning Juno. I must have something more for that, says he. Well, and What’s the price of this? says Mercury, nodding his head at himself. Why, says the man, if you are in earnest, and will buy the other two, I will throw you that into the bargain.

Moral

Nothing makes a man so cheap and little in the eyes of discerning people, as his enquiring after his own worth, and wanting to know what value others set upon him.

HUMANS AND PETS - ΤΟ ΓΑΤΑΚΙ ΚΑΙ Ο ΚΑΘΡΕΦΤΗΣ

  Ναι, αλλ’ αυτό το έκτακτο γατάκι είναι τάχα κι ευτυχισμένο;… Σεις τώρα θα νομίζετε πως είναι, και πολύ. Αφού τ’ αγαπούμε όλοι τόσο, αφού έχει ένα ολάκερο σπίτι δικό του, αφού μπορεί να τρώει, να κοιμάται και να παίζει όσο θέλει, τί του λείπει για μια τέλεια γατίσια ευτυχία;… Αλήθεια· κι εγώ αυτή την ιδέα είχα ώς προχτές. Είδα όμως πως ήμουν γελασμένος: Το γατάκι μας δεν είναι τέλεια ευτυχισμένο! Κάτι του λείπει. Κι αυτό είναι η συντροφιά των δικών του, των ομοίων του –η αγκαλιά, το γάλα κι η περιποίηση της μητέρας του, τα χάδια, τα παιχνίδια και τα μαλωματάκια των αδελφών του. Δε νομίζετε πως είναι πολύ σπουδαίο αυτό που του λείπει, και πως τίποτα, καμιά ανθρώπινη αγάπη και φροντίδα δεν μπορεί να το αντικαταστήσει;

A MISCHIEVOUS FELINE

A KITTEN IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR

Xenopoulos was chief editor of the now-legendary magazine "The Edification of Children" (Η Διάπλασις των Παίδων) from 1896 to 1948, during which time he was also the magazine's main author. His was the trademark signature "Σας ασπάζομαι, Φαίδων" ("yours faithfully, Phaedon, literally: I’m kissing you)"

The following letter is taken from this magazine.

Athens, October 27, 1928

Dear Friends,

We were given a little kitten in the neighborhood. It was a cute, white, female puss – but with too long whiskers – very clever and lively. We were all infatuated by the naughty imp! We don’t let it out of our hands: we look after it, feed it, wash it, play with it, and at night we take it in our beds. We dread for its life, its tiny life; it is a question of stepping on the little creature to… One day, greedy as it is, snatched a hunk of bread core… colored – my daughter, who paints, cleaned her colors with it. In no way could we take it out of its mouth! It gulped it down at once. Shortly it manifested the symptoms of mild poisoning. We were afraid it could not make it, and we were preparing to mourn for its premature and needless demise treating the loss as a great misfortune… But, to our great joy, the little kitten survived – cats have nine lives after all – and in the very same evening it started its antics again – its games, its roguishness, its funny acts and its mischiefs…

I think it is thoroughly needless to describe its devilries. You also have kittens and you know at first hand.  But I’ve got to tell you this: my kitten is more beautiful and cleverer than any other in the world, and consequently than yours. It is an exceptional kitten – I should say “supernatural”.  Its whiskers and its eyes prove it; for despite my age, I have never seen a two month-old kitten having longer whiskers, and larger and brighter eyes. And please, I brook no objection about this and I don’t mean to discuss it with anyone.

You ought not to envy me my better kitten than yours; neither should you hold it against me for being so blunt.

So far so good; but I wonder if this exceptional kitten is indeed happy… You must certainly believe that the kitten is very happy. Since we all love it so much, since our house belongs to it, too, since it is provided with food and shelter, since it is free to play as long as it wants, what else does it need to enjoy perfect cat happiness? I admit that I had that impression, as well, until the day before yesterday, but I proved to be wrong: our kitten is not entirely happy! It misses something, which is the companionship of its own kind – the cuddle, the milk and the grooming of its mother, as well as the caresses, the games and the fake fights with its siblings. Don’t you think that what it misses is very important, and nothing, no human affection and care can substitute it?

These days, there is no other grown cat from Pitch in our house; and Pitch grew jealous of the kitten. Whenever the kitten crossed Pitch’s path, she growled at it.

“Shame on you,” we scolded her; “you are a grown up, jet black and glorious cat, and you are jealous of a puny, white and insignificant puss.” In vain! The jealous cat continued her threatening snarls. We were afraid that she might gouge out the kitten’s eyes or she might scare it to madness – such a tame creature! – so we didn’t let Pitch upstairs where, willy-nilly, we keep the kitten confined. The kitten is too small to climb down the stairs. Therefore, it can’t see any of its kind, whether friend or enemy, save humans.

The day before yesterday, it saw one of its kin: it saw… itself in the mirror. You can’t imagine its surprise and joy! It immediately began to sniff, kiss, lick at its image and attack it playfully. It was at a loss for falling flat on its face against the glass; so, it was looking behind it to discover this unexpected and peculiar companion. And then it would turn around and began the tests anew. Finally, it realized that the kitten it was looking at in the mirror was not like the kittens it remembered at its own home – it couldn’t be touched or caught, there! – and so let it go to come and play with us. But it didn’t give up all hope to let it go forever. Every now and then it would remember it and go back to scrutinize it. You might say it was content and comforted with just staring at it…

Thus, a while ago I saw a very touching scene: I was looking for the kitten, which was nowhere to be found or heard. Shortly I found it idling on the back of an armchair near the wardrobe with its little snout stuck onto the mirror!

I approached slowly and noticed it had been sleeping: every so often he half opened its eyes and stared at its double lying also on the back of an armchair and sticking its little mug to its own – merely the hard, cold glass that separated them – and blinked its eyes at the other’s eyes. Oh, yes! That was enough to console my unhappy kitten!

How sorry I felt for it! And afterwards when I saw my wife wash it with water and soap and dry it with a piece of cloth, while the poor thing resisted to such an unusual ablution for a cat, I said to her:

“Why don’t we give it back to its mother? She can wash it far better using her tongue and saliva without tormenting it.

“Tormenting it? No big deal!” she replied. “Then it won’t take long. Soon it will grow up and learn to wash by itself.”

It is true; our kitten will grow up and will be able to wash itself. It will befriend Pitch, it will be able to climb down the stairs, go out, see its mother and siblings again, and make new acquaintances in the neighborhood. But still I wonder whether it will be entirely happy then. Perhaps it will miss our affection it now enjoys as a baby. Or if what most people say is true: unlike dogs, cats do not care about people’s endearments too much…

Yours faithfully

Phaedon

—Εμ' αφού τρως σκορδαλιά τι θες να μύριζες, ρε γυναίκα ; Ξυνόγαλο;

—Δεν ντρέπεσαι;
—Κι η Πίτσα;
—Ντρέπεται κι αυτή. Όλοι ντρεπόμαστε, ξέρεις τι ντροπαλή οικογένεια έχουμε βγει;
—Εμ, με τους φίλους μας πάμε! Είδες κανένα να πηγαίνει με τους εχθρούς του;

—Έτσι ξερά; Δεν θα μου δώσης ένα φιλάκι;
—Ντροπή ! Κι η Πίτσα;

—Στέλιο, θέλεις να φας σκορδαλιά;

—Δεν σου φαίνεται ότι της παρακάνεις γλύκες;
—Εγώ;
—Αλλά ποιος;
—Το ξέρεις ότι το παράκανες;
—Τι έκανα;

—Γιατί την έβαλες μπροστά στο αυτοκίνητο;
—Ε, πού να την βάλω; Να την δέσω και να τρέχει από πίσω;

—Τι κάνεις, παιδί μου;
—Εμένα το λες που την παντρεύτηκα;
—Γιατί της χρειάζεται, δεν της χρειάζεται;
—Και τι καθόμαστε;
—Αμή εγώ;

—Τι σου έχω;
—Τι;

—Τι έπαθες;
—Σκορδαλιά μυρίζεις! Στης Μπίμπης, ε;

At home we never make garlic sauce. It is not that I don’t like it. In fact, I love it. But Pitsa is against it.

I don’t eat garlic sauce. I can’t stand going somewhere and reek.”

“Well, when you don’t eat garlic how do you expect to smell of, wife? Sour milk?”

“Garlic sauce is out of the question!”

This is unrequited craving; but Bibi understands me:

“Don’t fret, Stelio dear. When I prepare garlic sauce I’ll call you up to come over and eat together.”

Pitsa belongs to me and Bibi to no one. They both are the best friends in the world. They exchange such phrases as ‘dear’ and ‘honey’, they just kiss each other in the air and they barely touch their cheeks. They agree on almost everything, and indeed Pitsa went to court as a witness for Bibi’s divorce. They have their own secrets, they play cards, they scorn and duly revile the others of their kind, and generally they fare like two dear little sisters in this ingrate world.

That’s why Bibi considers me as her brother, too.

“Come on, make him some garlic sauce.”

“Forget it!”

“But he’s just a little boy…”

Of course I’m a little boy and I beg you, Bibi, don’t pamper me too much, because you’ve got cute little eyes, you are tender and I like you quite a lot, and above all I’m a little boy…

It’s true, when a couple of times I have attempted to be very close to you, your cute little face grew sulky.

“Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”

“I am, but always afterwards.”

“What about Pitsa?”

“She’s ashamed, too. We all are. Do you know what a bashful family we’ve proved to be?”

“I don’t mean this. Pitsa is my friend…”

“Well, it’s our friends we flock together! Have you seen anyone hook up with their enemies?”

“I never betray my friends…”

Bibi never betrays her friends; nonetheless, I daresay she likes to fool around a bit; otherwise she would slap me on the face and say: “get lost, you creep!”

“She does no such a thing, though. She’s only laughing… And when a Bibi laughs you grow confident. And if you are confident, you go ahead… And if you go ahead, you find yourself outside her front door.

“Well, goodnight…”

“Just like that? Aren’t you going to give me a kiss?”

“Shame on you! Are you forgetting Pitsa?”

“Give me one and Pitsa will give me another.”

“Come on, be off…”

As far as garlic sauce is concerned, I can’t complain. It’s Bibi that provides me with it. Whenever she cooks zucchinis, horse beans and whatever else goes with garlic sauce, she gives me a ring:

“Stelio, do you feel like garlic sauce?”

And Pitsa is always nagging:

“You can go, but don’t come home stinking; you’d better go straight to your office, if you please!”

These things always came to pass and we all three had it easy. No suspicion in Pitsa’s mind; in fact, I wonder if she’s got any, at all. She took great care of her friend, we took her out with us – in a few words we did what we ought to do to an unchaperoned friend and generally… I got by. Well, to the best of my abilities, I snatched some tidbits off Bibi, without, naturally, her being too generous, but I liked it all.

It must also be said something else. There are some friends who would be too willing to seduce their friends’ husbands, and Bibi was no exception. And it was as clear as day…

And what’s sad, I had not only seen the clarity of day but Pitsa, as well, though it had taken her some time to see it.

“Don’t you think you go too far with your gallantry?”

“Who, me?”

“Who else, then?”

“No, brother! She’s a lonely girl and our friend, so I’m being nice to her.”

“Forget it…”

The first time she just said it; the second she grew furious.

“Do you know you’ve gone overboard this time?”

“What have I done?”

“With this cow. I saw you dancing too close with her tonight. You helped her with her food; you were over attentive and smiled at her sweetly.”

“I beg your pardon! You’ve hurt my feelings!”

“I know what I’m talking about! I have half a mind to grab her by the hair and we’ll go haywire!”

“You’re making your heart heavy for nothing.”

“Do it again and we’ll reckon about it, all right.”

I let a week go by, but roguishness was tempting me. You see, I’m a sly bastard.

That night, on our return from Kifissia, Pitsa was fuming

“Why did you let her sit next to you in the car?”

“Well, where could I let her sit? Should I have hitched her behind the car and make her race after?”

“The seat next to you belongs to me.”

“I let her sit in front so that she wouldn’t feel lonely.”

“Oh, humbug to her, too.”

And what’s more, dear reader, she said that to Bibi, too.

“Listen up, my girl; if you came over to ruin my home, you’d better not set your foot here again!”

Bibi wept. They two bitched and traded insults. And their friendship was over and out.

So I lost Bibi, and above all, I missed her garlic sauce. Indeed. I relished the sauce, and that was over, too.

Not more than three days later, I received a phone call in my office.

“Stelio, this is Bibi.”

“How are you, kiddo?”

“How am I? I’m very upset. I’d like to see you…”

I waited for her in my car at Metz. She arrived, got into the car and headed to Vouliagmeni.

“She’s awful!”

“Don’t tell me; I’m aware of it; I’m married to her.”

“The very idea! She has suspected us that…”

“Horrid thoughts, really…”

“It’s nobody’s fault. Put the blame on me that I’ve maintained my self-respect. Why, if I wanted to, I could have an affair with you… well, I beg your pardon!”

“Oh, don’t mention it; but go on!”

“She needs to a lesson, doesn’t she?”

“So, why don’t we give her one, then?”

“Stelio, you know I’m fond of you.”

“Well, I’m fond of you, too!”

“Stelio, what good may come out of it, I want you to come to my place so I can take my revenge on her. Then she can’t be worrying in vain.”

“Let’s go…”

“Not tonight. The day after tomorrow at noon. And then you’ll find out what Bibi is really worth for.”

I cooked the whole business nicely! And I managed the thing better when I got

Aleko to phone me at home:

“Stelio, the Turks are coming tomorrow on business and we’ve planned to invite them out to lunch. There’ll be only men…”

Pitsa, who was eavesdropping, swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

The following day at noon, perfumed and spiffed up, I was at Bibi’s.

Bibi laughed cryptically:

“What have I got for you?”

“What?”

“Tope in garlic sauce!”

“You don’t say!”

For a moment I was afraid that my clothes could trap the aroma of garlic, indicative of Bibi’s cuisine; but I could easily explain away the smell. Well, the visitors came from Istanbul, and we all tasted garlic sauce. After all, Turks love garlic…

Gluttonous as I am, I hit the food right away; I ate till I burst. Then followed a digestive drink, lying on the couch and petting. Promises and assurance, but nothing more; at four I was at home to freshen up.

No sooner had I entered than Pitsa was already at the door.

“Breathe out to me!”

“What’s come over you?”

“Breathe!”

I did.

“You smell of garlic! So, you’ve been to Bibi’s, have you?”

“No, it’s the guests…”

“What guests, you cheat? It was she that has just phoned me to prove she wasn’t to blame. It was you who’s been bugging her. The girl is OK and tried to keep you off, but you…”

Pitsa and Bibi have made up. They don’t want me in their company any more. Thus, I’ve missed the garlic sauce, and this is what gets me down.

Metz, Vouliagmeni, Kifissia are suburbs in Athens.
