ON ST JOHN’S FEAST DAY Kyriakos
Charalambides
Rendered by
Vassilis C. Militsis On St John’s
Feast day I went to see John, my friend. He had died two years before, but I sorely
missed him for our chat about poetry and many other interesting topics. As
soon as I reached the cemetery, I saw him sitting on his grave smoking. “What’s
that you’re doing, John? “Even dead, you couldn’t have given up smoking.” He smiled:
“Nasty habit, buddy; it’s too late now to change. See Pericles and Alexander,
let alone mentioning Euripides and Hector; Penelope and Thucydides, whose glowing
tip of their cigarettes is an old story. But to no purpose; life is short and
there is no end to people’s suffering (Papadiamantis).* Let’s wish for our
well-being; in this way we need no more fun. Complaining can harm our hearts.
Let me fix you a cup of coffee if you’ve got time, of course…” “Come on,
John, do you even have coffee? And don’t tell me it’s roasted, too!” “It
surely is! Haven’t the birds twittered it to you on your way here? And don’t
look at these cypresses; they aren’t stable, they sway back and forth at the
slightest flying. And if you want to know my opinion, according to Hades,
poetry is revenant – only a stone’s throw away until its resurrection. Listen,
pal, poetry needs pleasure, high quality food and a taste of death… Pardon
me, the fool I am; I’ve drifted! I’m being expected by Dante and Virgil;
they’re just beyond this stone fence. I’ve to hurry; don’t go away, I’ll be
back in a jiffy.” Two years have
gone by and the wretched bum has not come back. See also: Translation – Kyriakos Charalambides - Arbeit an Europa

Η ΚΟΝΤΗ ΜΝΗΜΗ ΕΝΟΣ ΛΑΟΥ - THE SHORT MEMORY OF A PEOPLE
|

THE MEMORY OF A GUPPY (What does it
really mean?) By Pavlos Methenitis Rendered by
Vassilis C. Militsis Many people contend the guppies’ memory lasts only three seconds. However, this is only a myth. According to certain scientific researches, these lovely fish can remember events even for a time of almost two weeks. More researches allow a far longer memory capacity from three to five months even. If we think that guppies live only from five to ten years, it is obvious that these cute little fish have a memory, mutatis mutandis, longer than some humans do, particularly the Greeks. The Greeks, consequently, at the May 23 elections, have blatantly proved that they have forgotten everything without exception: all the suffering that the Mitsotakis administration has showered upon them. They have forgotten the 37,000 dead, victims of the Covid pandemic. These casualties would have certainly been fewer had not the New Democracy administration dismantled the National Health System for the benefit of the private hospital owners; they have forgotten the allegedly legal thievery of their income through indirect taxation on foodstuffs and fuel; the plumb decline of the living standard; they have forgotten the huge redistribution of public wealth for the benefit of energy companies and of the big capitalists in general; the privatization of the National Energy Company, the extravagant salaries of its golden boys, the fetid financial scandals perpetrated by the ‘blue’ chums, the deep political corruption; they have forgotten the biased mass media, the cell phone taps of the citizen’s privacy; they have forgotten the hundreds of thousands of primary residences auctions, the soaring public debt, the savage unnecessary law enforcement by the police and their shooting of Roma in cold blood. They have also forgotten the dead at the tragic rail accident at Tempi. The Greeks
have manifestly proved that they have intolerance to truth, which makes them
be forgetful. Besides, the term ‘truth’ [alêthêia in Greek], i.e. all that is
in accordance with events – what agrees with reality, what has actually transpired
or transpires or it is absolutely certain it will – derives from the
adjective ‘alêthês’ [truthful], which in turn originates from the negative
prefix ‘a’ and ‘lêthê’ which means forgetfulness or oblivion [a+lêthê-ia=no
oblivion]. According to the The Dictionary of the Modern Greek Language the
adjective ‘alêthês’ originally defined events or things that are impossible
to forget or conceal; therefore, a truthful person is crystal clear,
controllable, and cannot lie; and ‘truth’ is the situation in which things
cannot be forgotten. And yet, Greek
people forget. Therefore, they despise truth. They are loathe to confront their
misery, they turn a blind eye in front of reality, they conveniently opt for
lies instead of disturbing truths, thus disabling their memories. According
to the Dictionary, memory is the capacity of the mind to maintain facts,
events, images, previous experiences, and to recall them at the appropriate
stimulus. The term ‘memory’ [mnêmê in Greek] derives from the verb [mimnêskô=
remember] and originally from indoeuropean [*men=think]. Moreover, the verb
[manthanô=learn], which points to the acquisition of knowledge and education,
is of the same root. When, however,
the Greek people not only did not punish the administration of the New
Democracy party for all its crimes perpetrated at their expense, but they
also rewarded this party, awarding it with the greatest percentage this party
had received at the 2019 elections: (40.79% from 39.85%). When the people granted Kostas Ach. Karamanlis,
the former Tempi Tragedy Minister 24,651 votes, it
is as clear as day that in general the Greek people appreciates neither truth
nor memory, not even thinking or education. In conclusion, if only our people possessed a guppy’s memory. You’ve drunk of Arni’s water You’ve drunk of Arni’s water Of the fountain of oblivion. You’ve drunk of Arni’s water And you’ve denied me Lyrics: Arni’s water – Stavros Siolas |

ΤΑ ΜΑΥΡΑ ΜΑΤΙΑ ΓΟΗΤΕΥΟΥΝ - ΤΗΕ ENCHANTMENT OF DARK EYES
|
DARK EYES By Petros
Gatzias Rendered by
Vassilis C. Militsis “Your eyes,” I
told her. “What’s wrong
with my eyes?” she responded. “They’re
pitch-black,” I replied. “That’s the
way I was born…” she answered back. “I can’t help
not looking at them,” I commented. Only because
of these eyes, with such an intense gaze, I could not let this girl go. I did
not care what her face, her figure and her personality were like or what she
did in her life; or how old she was. Only her eyes fascinated me. I am in my
late thirties, and I have never approached a woman on an impulse – even to
pay her a compliment. But obviously she is accustomed to such a reaction.
This black stare of hers is enticing; captivating. Unlike me who have been
charmed, Mara – that is her name – did not find something remarkable on me.
Nevertheless, she seemed to be amused with me; but what chance could an
entertainer have to hope for? “Why do you
like my dark eyes?” she suddenly asked with an air that meant if she did not
get the right answer, she would vanish for certain. She had already surpassed
herself to speak to me… I was really
scared. Such a thing had not happened to me before. I suddenly felt as if I were
taking part in a sort of competition, where I would either win a prize or lose
everything. However, her eyes were something else. I was so attracted to them
that I did not want to lose them. I did not give
an answer. I only kept looking at her and she left without saying a word.
Three evenings later, however, I saw the dark eyes before me again at the
reception of the British ambassador. She was sitting alone in the patio, in
the half light, impressively dressed and made up, but she looked sad. She was
wearing a black toilet and her dark hair glistened bizarrely in the dark;
however, I was again attracted by her eyes – dark but lost in nothingness. I was about to
approach her when I saw an aged man who was standing by her and tenderly
stroking her back. Her dark eyes looked at him in a way that appeared to me
as despair and then they went on fading into void again. “This woman
cannot be happy,” I thought and began to speculate about what was going on. And
then I stopped in my tracks at the moment she lifted her head and looked at
me with that deep, dark stare that penetrated right into my soul. A lot has been
said about dark eyes in the past – a host of folk beliefs, but as far as I am
concerned I still remember Mikhalkov’s motion picture Dark Eyes, starring the wonderful Marcello Mastroianni and Yelena
Safonova, his dark-eyed muse, whom he tried hard to reclaim. I suddenly
felt like a superhero that was going to break her chains without, however,
thinking that she had not given me the right to do so. I waited until the
aged man left and I went to stand in front of her and to refresh her memory,
I repeated the words of our first meeting. “Your eyes,” I
told her. She raised her
head and looked at me. Then, as if she were a member of a conspiracy of
passwords, she said: “What about my
eyes?” “They’re
pitch-black,” I replied. “That’s the
way I was born…” she answered back. “I can’t help
not looking at them,” I commented. In fact, I
could not help not looking at them. And then something unexpected occurred. “Let’s get out
of here,” she said grabbing my hand. “…the best thing life could grant me was a lie… I
was planning to be a big liar… the best way to tell about an event is to
invent it…” While she was walking next
to me, I remained silent dwelling on Alexakis’ words and how right he was. I
still remember his deep, drawn-out voice on the phone, when we once happened
to talk and then I looked up his novel The
Little Greek. Ever since, these words have haunted me lending another
dimension to my reality. Her presence put me in an awkward position. On the spur of the moment I could not guess what might come next. All of a sudden she was next to me; I could speak to her, touch her but I hung back. She was walking deep in thoughts, which I could not conjecture. I reached out and clasped her hand in mine. We looked like a cute couple enjoying a romantic stroll. Her fingers felt frozen as though they were lifeless – rigid. “The man you saw me with is my husband…” she said suddenly. I was shocked.
When I espied her more carefully, I guessed she could not have been older
than in her late twenties whereas her husband must have already been past his
seventies. “These dark
eyes of mine are my curse. He was enchanted by them ten years ago; he almost
bought me from my own – refugees from Russia. I was born here…” The whole
time she was talking, I was observing her. She certainly is Russian, I
thought to myself. "He’s kind, but I can’t stand it any longer… You’re the first to speak to me so spontaneously about my eyes. I noticed in your glance how bewildered you’d been. The rest see it rather sexually arousing.” I gulped; for it is true that since I had seen her for the first time, all I had in my mind was sex, which obsessed me. Therefore, I do not differ from the rest, as she believed. I smiled. While she was
talking to me, I was trying very hard to remember where I had seen her
husband before. He presented a typical figure. He usually wears a striped,
dark suit – the way he was dressed in the reception – custom-made shoes and a
wide-brimmed straw hat, which makes him appear as a Cuban bourgeois. He
always holds between his fingers a holder with a cigarette, which is still
smoldering. He must have had some charm in his youth, which now is but his
old fashioned reflection. I met this man
before. We had a chance talk in the past. He wanted to tell me his point of
view about love. He had talked to me about his wife; how proud he was to have
her even though he could no longer touch her. He went along with Moravia’s
logic: if the pot of honey is yours,
you don’t care if others taste of it, too. “I used to
have my own love affairs,” she told me suddenly, as if she wanted to be
exonerated from a wicked past. “I had lain
with quite a few men, though I’m married. He often urged me himself and then
he wanted to be told everything! He would then caress me all over and so he
was gratified. He wanted, however, to know my lovers so that he could be in
full control of the situation. Docile to his depraved whims – that’s what I
was. When I first saw you, I realized you could take me away from all this.
And when I met you again by chance at the embassy, I was sure. You are my
destiny!” “And how can you run from fate…” I muttered without her hearing me though she was regarding me all the while. I suddenly bent down and kissed her. It was not a kiss exactly; it was only a soft brushing on her lips. She was not startled. She might have
been expecting it, in fact; but, to be true, I wonder why I did it. The
contact with her lips left me utterly indifferent. I realized now what I had
known right at the start. When I had first seen her walking in the street, it
was her eyes I craved for as if they belonged to a sorceress who seduced and
allured me into the innermost depths of her soul. However, I never wanted to
go through those twin ‘portals’ but to be in front of them just looking on. “I was sure
you were my destiny” she heaved a sweet sigh and snuggled into my arms. A short while
before she spoke her last words, we had sat on a bench in the nearby park.
She kept on being tucked in my arms in such a way that I could not even look
into her dark eyes. We appeared like two love birds from a distance; but if
one could come closer, one could see the frozen look on my face. The first thing I noticed when I raised my eyes was the cigarette that glowed in an old-fashioned holder and the sleeve of his jacket; that striped, dark suit. And then the custom made shoes and the wide-brimmed straw hat that reminds you of a Cuban bourgeois. He was apparently standing there for quite a bit of time and watching us without speaking. He was only listening. He reached out his hand and Mara submissively rose from me and went to him. He said nothing. He embraced her. He looked into her dark eyes for a while and then he gently pulled her away and they left. I remembered what I was once told: if you have the pot of honey all your own, you don’t care if others taste of it, too. The fact that she had lied to me that I was her destiny did not bother me. I was only sorry that I was going to miss her dark eyes. Impulsively, I cried: “Your eyes.” “What’s wrong
with my eyes?” she responded without turning around. “They’re
pitch-black,” I replied. “That’s the
way I was born…” she answered back. “I can’t help
not looking at them,” I commented. Only then did she turn granting me her glance. In the dark of the night they seemed to me still darker and sadder… Petros Gatzias is a journalist and writer By the same: |
