THE OLD GAMES
Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis
It was very cold; a typical winter day. There was no traffic in the streets and all one could see were the lights from the flats of the apartment houses. Vangelis and Sravroula were sitting in their room as they used to do every day. The TV set was on, their schoolbooks were scattered on the table, and on their beds there were bags of potato chips and wafer bars. At that moment each was relishing a hamburger downing it with a huge glass of soft drink. “Whew! I’m bored with this game,” Vangelis said at some moment taking a break from the video game on his computer. “Then let me play, too,” grumbled Stavroula, who stood up dropping the plate with the hamburger on her bed. Ketchup and mustard oozed soiling the sheets.
“See what you’ve done? Clean it up now,” said her brother reproachfully. “No, you do the cleaning; you’ve been sitting and playing, and now I want to play.” Finally, their mother would do the chore… Vangelis wiped his glasses and stood up to grab his sister’s chips, but he was out of breath after a couple of steps. He pulled at the bag, which was ripped open and all the chips fell onto the floor. “Look what you’ve done! It’s your fault.” “No, it’s yours.” The two siblings began to quarrel. The more they were bawling as the time passed, the more tired they were growing. They could barely utter their words and their breathing came out irregular. Finally they sat in front of the computer together and started playing a new game. They were two fat children that were continually eating and playing video games or watching television. They had no friends; they could have made friends with the other kids of the building, but those probably had no friends either, and they also went on playing video games. The two kids had seen some of those at the entrance of the apartment house when they went to or returned from school, but they neither exchanged any greetings, nor talked to them. “I’m bored,” said Vangelis after a couple of hours of playing. “Me too,” Stavroula agreed. And then it dawned on them; they remembered that they had kept some older video games in the loft; they could take them down and play them on. They would seem new to them. They put a chair in front of the closet to reach the loft. By the skin of his teeth Vangelis managed to reach up with Stavroula’s pushing him. For a moment he was afraid that the chair might break; it creaked so dangerously. He stretched himself to open the door. “Come on … try a little more…,” Stavroula kept on encouraging, but her brother had been out of breath. Moreover, he suffered from fear of heights as he was standing on the chair. Like pulling teeth, he finally managed to open the door. He did not know what he was groping for as he could not see clearly. He stretched his hand and pulled at something; and then, as though all things that hung or banked on it, spilled onto the floor, followed by Vangelis who tottered and fell on her sister.
“Ouch! You’re hurting me. Stand up!” yelled his sister, who started bawling and weeping. Vangelis was hurting, too. And the more he tried to move, the harder it was for him as his feet were on the things that had spilled on the floor. “Aaaah!” the two siblings wondered. “What are all these?” A heap of toys lay on the carpet; toys that they had never seen before: toy soldiers, big and small balls, a skipping rope, a slingshot, table games and toy cars.
They could not remember having ever touched them – these toys belonged to their parents. Both Vangelis and Stavroula stood still and speechless before the abundance of these toys. They looked at each other and as if in agreement they began to pick up and arrange the boxes in such a way as to make room.
And after several hours they succeeded in tidying them up, and though they were eager to find out how these games were played, they fell into their beds exhausted. The old games, however, whetted their appetite to work on them. On the following days they were gradually carrying them down to the garage where there were the storerooms of the apartments. There they had plenty of room to spread them out and play. They tidied them on the shelves in such a way so they could reach and take them down easily, while they were looking for solutions how to deploy them. Their days after school were becoming more and more significant. At the beginning their parents were surprised; they were not used to Vangelis and Stavroula getting out of the apartment, not even from their very rooms. They were not used to seeing their computer off and their hamburgers intact on the kitchen table. So, they decided to find out where their children were off to. And how happy they felt seeing them assemble the old games and arrange them. “Hey! Do you want me to show you how to play this?” a granny asked Stavroula when she had accidently seen her in the basement. The granny had shown her how to skip rope. “I’ll fetch my granddaughter so you can play together; she has got no friends…” A little boy from the second floor was also added, besides the granny’s granddaughter; and two more siblings from the fourth and still another boy from the first joined in. The company was completed by a little girl from the flat next door. The kids would get together in the basement where they faked wars with the toy soldiers; they played table games, skipped ropes and used the slingshot to shoot pebbles at targets. Every afternoon they got to know old games such as hopscotch, tag or hide and seek. The grandparents living on the ground floor would prepare various delicacies: cookies and sweetmeats – not hamburgers and pizzas, or potato chips and crisps. They often joined the kids, too, told stories and helped them. And every night Vangelis and Stavroula went up to their apartments, weary but happy, and fell immediately asleep. That November brought nothing new to many people. However, to Vangelis and Stavroula it brought something they had never experienced in their lives before. As the time passed, the two kids were gradually less out of breath and breathed a lot better; they began to leave their hamburgers untouched on the kitchen table. They even stopped buying them completely. As the time passed the television set stopped being continually on in their room, so did their computer. The video games were becoming out of date but they did not feel like buying new ones. And in the passage of time the rest of the occupants were getting to know one another and go down to the basement to have fun with the children themselves. They stopped nagging and began dreaming of next spring and summer. They were making plans about how to shape the landscape in front of the building for the children to play. And in the end, who could have imagined that all this has started on a cold November afternoon with a few old games! |
