ΑΝΑΜΝΗΣΕΙΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΠΟΛΗ - REMINISCENCES FROM ISTANBUL

Στα μέρη μας, έχουν ήδη κλείσει. Ζέστη βλέπεις. Τα μπάνια έτσι και αλλιώς στην θάλασσα θα άρχισαν, το καρπούζι θα έπεσε, στο λιμανάκι στα Θεραπειά, εκεί που παλιά-παλιά  είχε βρει καταφύγιο η Αργώ,  θα έχουν αράξει μερικά καρπουζόφλουδα και άντε να τα μαζέψει -άραγε ποιός;- ο δήμος. Στο Γερμανικό πάντως, καρπουζόφλουδα και καβουνόφλουδα [1] τότε που κολυμπούσα εκεί, δεν έδιναν παρουσία, το ρεύμα βλέπεις. Στα σκαλάκια, μάλιστα, παρόντα. Ένα άλλο "άραγε", που να κολυμπούν τώρα οι καλοκαιρινοί και οι ντόπιοι;

SCHOOL TERM ENDS FOR THE SUMMER

By Niki Beales

Adapted by Vassilis C. Militsis

In our parts schools have already closed for the summer. You see, it is too hot for the season. Either way, sea bathing has begun.  And along with the dog days people are in the bad habit to discard

watermelon remains in the Tarabya [Therapia]  cove, where the Argo had once anchored in the leeward. Now some watermelon rinds float around to be picked by who? The town authorities, of course. But, when I used to swim in the German district neither watermelon nor melon rinds could be seen; you see, they drifted away with the undercurrents, though once in a while you could see some by the seaside. Now I wonder where the summer holiday makers and the locals swim.

I have taken up reading once again

Stratis Myrivilis’s  The Teacher with the Golden Eyes. The book was recommended to me by Mr. Yiannis, a dear family friend, who is in heaven now together with my parents, and the four of them make a good companionship.

Myrivilis: His penname and only the word in Greek refers to someone who brings along the fragrance of the sea breeze and blends it with the sweet scented flowers of the island of Lesbos. I always loved to read his books. Several years later, when I happened to meet his granddaughter, Christina – being both of us young moms – it was almost as if I had known the writer himself.

With schools closing for the summer, I recalled my female teachers. The teachers who never went on strike and who never fell ill, as far as I can remember; they were smartly dressed, beautifully coiffed and presented a general well-groomed appearance. They used to teach through the text books and served as models of inspiration to us. They were decent and they never gave cause for criticism, as it were.

They were proud of us as we were growing up.

As girls grew up and were on the threshold of early womanhood, there also came the time of nylon stockings instead of chaussettes, as we called the short socks. Well, granny and mom were against but they were eventually coaxed into it – my aunt was on my side – dad, naturally, remained impartial on such matters and my long-sought objective was attained.

It was on a Sunday; Burası İstanbul radyosu [you are tuned to Istanbul Radio]. Its program had begun much earlier with the melodious lyrics Üsküdar'a gider iken, speaking about the scarf the hanım found in the street and her early aroused clerk with languid eyes and the muddy tails of his long coat.

I donned my Sunday garments and my gossamer stockings. Destination: Church – where else on Sunday? I paused at the entrance; “What’s wrong? Why have you stopped?” asked granny, who was leading the way. “The stockings,” I answered. “A runner?” she asked again. “No, my teachers; I feel embarrassed,” I replied.

We held high regard for them; that was the reason. I still wonder what stockings and high heels later on had to do with respect.

Night has fallen, ten o’clock but it is still light. The moon is playing hide and seek with the apple tree, which is swaying in the gust of the wind. The apples are still green and tiny but I am afraid they will fall. Shortly, I shall pick up The Teacher with the Golden Eyes and I shall bring to my mind’s windows my teachers. I will bring them close to me so that I can hear the beating of their hearts. And if I try real hard I may make out their golden color.

Today is Saint Kyriaki’s feast day and in

ten days from now  Saint Marina’s.

My Therapeia fellow villagers know what I am thinking about.

Cheers until next year.
