ΤΙΝΟΥΣ ΕΙΣΑΙ ΕΣΥ;
 (1960-2018)

- Τίνους είσαι εσύ;
-Του κουκουέ;

WHOSE KID ARE YOU?

By Yota Argyropoulou
(1960-2018)

Rendered by Vassilis C. Militsis

-          Whose kid are you?

-          Panayotis’s, the shoemaker’s

-          The Commie’s?

I did not know what Commie meant but the friendless reception of Frosyni, the priest’s daughter, in her courtyard foreboded no good. We were playing hide-and-seek and inadvertently I hid by her stone cabin, a little way off from our house. Although we used to roam all over the village, Frosyni’s doorway was sacrosanct. Sable clad, already on the threshold of her sixth decade, single, unsociable, she had no treat or a good word for kids.

When I went home, I asked my mother what a Commie was. She was agitated, asked me where I had heard that and told me not to say it again.

-          Frosyni, the priest’s daughter, calls father a Commie.

-          Alas! What a thorn in our side! Why ever should your father have so openly voted for Papandreou*? If we get pegged, we’re done for.

Two years after the ’65 general elections, spring had well set in. April brought us the junta. I was due to go to school in September. My mother tried vaguely to explain to me the obscure term Commie. “…Nobody has been left in the village, everybody has gone away, the next door neighbor, Mitsos Alevizos has not seen his sisters for years. But listen carefully. Keep your mouth shut, no questions to anyone outside our house. And never set foot in Frosyni’s, the priest’s daughter’s yard.”

Sometime later I learned that Frosyni, except for being unsociable, was clumsy – that is how they described her to me; and though she was a priest’s daughter, she was left single. One of her matches became legendary: when the aspiring bridegroom was about to come, she asked her mother what she should say on the occasion: “What shall I say, mother?” “My daughter,” said papadia, her mother, “you shall treat him to a toast and say to your health, welcome, and then drink, too, and keep quiet.” Frosyni treated the bridegroom to the toast and breathlessly repeated as she had been coached: to your health, welcome, drink, too, and keep your mouth shut.
The bridegroom swallowed his glass at one gulp, said farewell to the priest and his wife, saddled his horse and galloped away to Desylla, his village.

He ran away as we, the kids, did from her yard.

*George Papandreou, prime minister of the time, a moderate politician belonging to the center. The majority of the right wing supporters stamped his voters as communists. (Translator’s note)
