Α. ΛΑΣΚΑΡΑΤΟΣ - THE PRESUMPTUOUS SCHOLAR

THE INKHORN SCHOLAR

Pedantic scholarship is also a characteristic. It is not certainly an inborn trait but an acquired one, and fixed only in the scholar’s spirit after an age-long endeavor and toil. This peculiar attribute consists in the attempted, voluntary dimming and warping of the expression of his ideas.

Still from an early age, tutored by a pedantic pedagogue, our scholar began to unlearn his mother tongue and replace it with another, more puristic and approaching the ancient attic dialect. He had to demolish from his mind the natural foundry of his national language, and build another one, artificial, unnatural and misty.

And he actually managed to do this task right from the first day he was taken to his inkhorn scholar’s procrustean bed until the year when he went to high school, where he stagnated. His pains had been great and long in those linguistic pillories, but in the end he accomplished his objective: now he can write in a purl-knotted, but recondite, language. He is capable of writing in a way that he can approximately be understood by the nation, but his intellect is not easily manifested, which would demote him to the grossest of the illiterate.

Thus, after this latter-day foundry of his spirit he expectorates gibberish such as “to the denudation through lures of aphrodisiac pleasures and promotion,” – “ the question due to the assault on Malavazi by the former police chief, Vratsalis,” – “against the assault before Podgorica and Sunds,” – “on the denigration manifested by England to the European verdict,” and a host of such nonsense. [Fragments taken from the press of that time. Translator’s note]

It goes without saying that in order to comprehend all this purl-knotted tangle, you have first to unravel the skein! Thus the inkhorn scholar is nationally distinguished by the ‘enterprising’ warping of expressing his ideas.

Suppose now the pedantic scholar at a governmental office, such as that of the Prefect. You submit to him an application of an important case of yours. He scrutinizes it in a hair-splitting way, noting your misspellings and trying to find out the derivation of some words, not used in his place of origin. This task accomplished, he considers that the most important part of your case has been completed!

Imagine that he is a poet. Unless the syllables, strictly counted, are the correct ones, the versification goes all right. If the text contains Aeschylean words and Demosthenian structure, the poetry is brilliant; the result wins the first prize at a literary contest.

Fancy him an auctioneer. He has learned his part by heart and blares it away. People rush in around him. Do you believe that they understand what he is saying? All they understand is that an auction is going on.
Examine this peculiar and presumptuous scholar from every facet; judge him as a whole. Then you will find him the stagnation incarnated and the doom of the Greek nation.

During his training, the inkhorn’s mind has been bound according to the foot binding of Chinese women.*
