THE POWER OF THE PEACH

The order was clear: whoever goes out in the street shall be shot. The police cruiser made a round early, around 7.00 and gave the order by the loudspeaker. They also fired an intimidating shot in the air. The neighborhood which began to wake up froze. Clothes remained half on the line; some radios emitted only atmospherics without being turned off.

At first, concerts, football matches and shows were cancelled. Then movie houses were closed down. Then shopping centers and small shops followed suit. Squares and parks were fenced off with barbed wire. Exits to the mountain and the sea were barred by boulders and roadblocks.

You could still be out in the streets. Long queues were being formed in front of the requisitioned food stores. Radios were blaring classical or church music and the television showed black and white pictures of the sixties. People admired at the freedom of those of previous generations despite their evident poverty. Pic-nick by the sea, racing on even in all beat up cars along the seaside highway. What a life!

Then the television went dumb. The black and white movies were censored as detrimental to society. Twitter, instagram and facebook were simultaneously collapsed. Blogs and sites froze.

The radio was the last to go, for scientific research had shown that classical and church music allayed human affect.

With the general curfew it also fell silent.

On the same day there was a power cut, too. Easter candles were retrieved whenever they could be had. In the dim light someone began to sing a song. Another one from the flat across sang the couplet while a third completed the refrain. In a while the entire block of flats was in full swing. Tambourines were produced; a drum and a guitar were also added. Everybody was clapping to the rhythm.

Thus, another ordered was issued: whoever comes out on the balcony shall be shot. Improvised concerts were cut short. Then the first human garbage truck made its appearance: its shape was reminiscent of a hearse, but it was five times its size. Two white coveralls and spacesuits that resembled astronauts got out. They walked in goose gait. They hurried up in the nearby apartment house. Behind the fourth floor window there was a tussle. The curtains were violently moved, a muffled voice was heard followed by complete silence. The astronauts issued from the flat dragging an oblong sac. Word got out that madam Meropi went mad. Mad people were being exterminated for the good of the community. Her son struggled savagely to rescue her. A few days later the astronauts in white reappeared to get him this time.

The method was bandied about. At first to a few, for fear of ‘squealing’. The more it brought results, the more confident people grew and they were spreading it to others. It was simple; the fact that they had not thought of it before, proved the magnitude of the harm that had been caused.

There were only five words: “Imagine what makes you happy.”

Nikos of the second floor imagined himself wake up early in the morning. He pictured a scene among cedars; the sun had not risen yet. He toyed with his fingers in the sand and waited for the sun to rise on the opposite hillside. He dived into the crystal clear water at the break of the first ray.

Maria brought to mind the wood oven in the village where her grandmother was baking round loaves. She even smelled the sourish odor of yeast and felt the rough touch of her granny’s hands. She was again ten years old with dried cakes of blood on her knees and with all the freedom of the world.

Christos fantasized of mustangs. He depicted them, in his mind, galloping for hours on the grassy meadows of the Pindus massive amidst wild flowers.

Many thought of small things at first; their minds did not go further such as: eating a peach and its juice running down their chins – peaches had vanished since a year ago, because they were deemed too sensual. Neither could they think of sipping a glass of cooled rosé wine and wistfully regarding the full moon – wine was also prohibited as hallucinogen. Or of running through the forest intoxicated by the fragrance of dried resin and fresh pine needles. Of picking wild flowers out of which to weave mayday wreathes; of lying on cool cotton sheets with the sea brine still on their bodies; of boarding on old, passenger ships, carrying tents and sleeping bags on their backs destined to the islands and on the way feeding the seagulls or watching the dolphins.

Gradually they gained courage. They worked out in their minds increasingly complex thoughts and their fantasies grew into whole scenarios. The first one came out to his balcony and with remarkable daring he watered a withered rose plant. Then he lifted his hands and turned his face to the sun. Afterwards, more came out. One was busy with the watering hose and another was sweeping the place. And then, timidly at first, the front door of a block was opened.

A throng poured out into the streets. Some had the impression they were in the forest and others at the seaside, but all proceeded to the main street together, attacking the invigilating police cruiser.

They tipped it over easily. Its siren went on shrieking but shortly was drowned in the singing of the multitude.
